Discussants at this event unpacked the tensions inherent between developing livestock markets to meet economic goals of the poor and meeting the nutritional needs of poor households raising livestock.
Are livestock at a tipping point for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals? Presentation by Shirley Tarawali, assistant director general of ILRI, at the ‘Sustainable Livestock, Sustainable Lives’ side event at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the United Nations Headquarters, in New York City, 20 July 2016
The following remarks were made by Shirley Tarawali, assistant director general of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) on 26 May 2016 at a side event held at the General Assembly of the World Organisation for Animal Health, in Paris, where an alliance of leading organizations in global livestock issues launched an advocacy brief and related materials.
Today and tomorrow (31 May–1 Jun 2016), Chatham House, the Livestock Global Alliance (LGA), the One Health Platform and other One Health partners are convening senior policymakers, academics, multilateral development agencies, business leaders and other private-sector stakeholders to discuss livestock’s role in poverty reduction, sustainable livestock production systems, innovations in livestock vaccines and diagnostics and the value of establishing national and regional One Health centres to provide advice on links among agriculture, sustainable livestock systems and human development.
ILRI Director General Jimmy Smith was in Haryana, India, to give the convocation address (aka ‘the commencement speech’ in North America) at NDRI’s 14th graduation ceremony. Smith was also being awarded an honorary degree (honoris causa) for his contributions to livestock research for development.
One of the fastest growing subsectors in agriculture–livestock–can significantly contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) if the opportunities it offers, especially for people in developing countries, are harnessed for economic growth, improved livelihoods and food and nutritional security.
