Jimmy Smith, director general of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), gave a keynote presentation at the 16th Asian Australasian Animal Production Congress, held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 10–14 Nov 2014. The overall theme of the congress was ambitious: ‘Sustainable livestock production in the perspective of food security, policy, genetic resources and climate change’. Smith’s plenary keynote, given as part of a series of ILRI activities to mark the 40-year anniversary of the institute, was titled ‘Livestock policy paradoxes: Promulgating a crisis? A ‘who’s who’ in livestock research-for-development gathering in Ethiopia

A high-profile two-day conference held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 6–7 Nov 2014, to mark the 40-year anniversary of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) brought together world leaders at the intersection of livestock science and development. This conference, the culmination of a series of events that ILRI organized in different parts of the world in the last quarter of 2014 to mark its 4-decade milestone, gave ILRI an opportunity to acknowledge the many people who have helped build the institute and make it what it is today. To mark 40 years of international research this year, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has been facilitating a series of events highlighting the ways livestock research advances the global development agenda, specifically for food and nutritional security, economic well-being and healthy lives. This Thursday and Friday (6–7 Nov 2014), ILRI is hosting a two-day high-profile conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where ILRI has a principal campus and has carried out livestock research for development for the last four decades. A major presentation was made at a special side event at the Borlaug Dialogue, in Iowa, on 15 Oct 2014. The side event was hosted by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) as part of a series marking ILRI’s 40-year anniversary this year. The presentation was made by Chris Delgado, who in 1999 led ground-breaking studies showing that a ‘Livestock Revolution’ was taking place in the global South. Continue reading
