The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) leads the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) livestock compact, members of which recently met with a USD500-million public-private partnership in Nigeria established to ‘de-risk’ agricultural financing by providing many of the actors along the country’s agricultural value chains with affordable financing. Rising demand for milk, meat and eggs in developing countries is opening up big new opportunities to establish and grow businesses and create jobs. While rapidly changing livestock systems pose a range of environmental, health and equity challenges across the highly heterogeneous livestock production systems worldwide, targeted investment in sustainable livestock research for development can produce more food, increase resilience in communities and the environment, and drive equitable and broad-based economic growth. Helping to ensure that hundreds of millions of poor small-scale livestock farmers, processors and marketers, many of whom are women, benefit from these opportunities will be crucial to achieving many of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Research to improve the health and productivity of farmed animals in tropical climates has received a £4 million boost from the UK Government. The investment from DFID was announced by the Secretary of State for International Development, Penny Mordaunt, during a visit to the University of Edinburgh. It will support research in the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health—a joint venture between the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute, SRUC, ILRI, the latter of which has major research facilities in Kenya and Ethiopia.
