The newly launched One Health Research, Education and Outreach Centre in Africa (OHRECA) at ILRI will contribute towards addressing neglected zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety and emerging infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.
A new partnership involving the Kenya Ministry of Health and ILRI with support from the German Federal Government was announced today. ILRI will utilize its laboratory facilities and staff to support the expansion of Kenya’s testing capacity for COVID-19. The testing was launched today, 18 May 2020, when the health director and German ambassador visited ILRI’s Kenya facilities.
On Thursday 17 January 2019, the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and ILRI hosted a workshop on the theme of ‘Sustainable livestock goes digital’ at the 11th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin.
ILRI was honoured this week (3 Sep 2018) to host a high-level German delegation including Maria Flachsbarth, parliamentary state secretary to Germany’s federal minister for economic cooperation and development, and Stefan Schmitz, deputy director of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), as well as senior staff of the Kenya Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation, including Andrew Tuimur, chief administrative secretary, and Ann Onyango, agriculture secretary; and representatives from several other CGIAR centres working in Kenya, including Tony Simons, director general of ICRAF, and representatives from the Nairobi-based International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe).
Shirley Tarawali’s keynote presentation at a GFFA expert panel session focused on Food of animal origin: Demand and diversity. She said that global demand for livestock-derived foods is changing both in quantities—with demand flattening in rich countries but increasing in low- and middle-income countries—and in qualities, varying by region and commodity, and that meeting that rising demand for livestock-derived foods ‘sustainably, responsibly and efficiently’ requires two main things—(1) moderating the demand, wasting less, producing more and improving production efficiency while also (2) taking account of the diversity of livestock systems and producers to maximize opportunities to address the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Emma Naluyima is a smallholder farmer and private veterinarian in Uganda who has integrated crop growing and livestock raising to build a thriving, profitable and environmentally friendly farm enterprise for her and her family.
